Damien Steele’s restaurant was on the other side of Brooklyn, next to a train station where a man got shot earlier today. I noticed a different air to the place when I walked into the restaurant. Very upscale. Flashy elegance. No one would even guess that the place was run by the devil himself.

As we walked in, I didn’t look around, didn’t make a note of the security cameras in the place. I knew he would most likely watch it after the meeting, and I didn’t want him getting too suspicious at this point.

Damien and his crew of five or six were sitting at a table farthest from the door. Damien himself was in the middle, eating a plate of rare steak. The man on his left was talking to him, and every once in a while, he would nod, but he made no other gesture that he was interested in the conversation.

He looked up when he saw us coming up, and his lips split into a wide reptilian grin.

“Joshy!” he said, spreading his arms wide and dropping his fork dramatically. “You never told me you were coming over!”

Although the statement was made casually, there was an undercurrent of tension in his smile, which told me that he saw it as an insult.

Josh froze a little, then gave him a nervous smile. Everyone knew that one didn’t just pull up on Damien Steele unannounced. That was a recipe for disaster.

“I told you I would be coming today,” he said. “Remember? At the meeting yesterday? And you said you wanted to meet my friend Leo?”

Damien frowned like he didn’t remember, and Josh swallowed imperceptibly. Everyone seemed to be holding their breaths until Damien smiled again.

“I’m just joshing ya,” he said. “Here, have a seat. Move over, Benzino.”

A tall, broad-shouldered man instantly got off his seat and stood to the side. We approached and took the two chairs available.

The minute we sat, Damien turned his eagle-eyed silvery gaze to me.

“So,” he said. “You’re the famous Leo King.”

“I am,” I said, unflinchingly meeting his gaze. I tried not to let my hatred for this man show, but it was the hardest part of this whole fucking act. I wasn’t scared of him, but everything in me begged to reach across the table and end him once and for all. I crushed that urge into a small, bubbling ball of vengeance. Soon, I told myself. Soon.

“Where are you from, Leo King?” he asked.

“Is that important?” I said. “I thought we were here to do business, not discuss life stories.”

The air seized again, and Josh stared at me like I had lost my mind. But the truth was that I had to maintain the act. I was known as a no-nonsense arms dealer with more clients than I wanted. If Damien sensed that I wanted this too much or was scared of him, he would know that everything they said about me was a bluff.

Damien cocked his head. “I like this guy,” he said to Josh.
